Events : MAC in the Community

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around” – Leo Buscaglia

With their acts of caring, the Eden Food Bank in Mississauga turns an individual’s and families’ lives around. People come to them during a crisis and the food bank provides food assistance to up to 500 families every month. The food bank depends on donations – food and money to meet the growing needs of the individuals and families that rely on them. For example, MAC, with the selfless support of its members and supporters, raised approximately 50 pounds of non-perishable food items during its annual picnic in June 2011 and donated it to the Eden Food Bank. In addition to donations, the food bank also organizes fund raising activities to raise awareness of hunger and poverty issues and encourage contributions of food items. To successfully coordinate these activities, they need the volunteer support of communities and students.

One of the objectives foremost and of utmost importance to the Mangalorean Association of Canada (MAC) is service of the less fortunate in the community and leadership by example. MAC teamed up with the Eden Food Bank during their Riders Against Hunger event on August 20, 2011, where bikers participated in a poker run-style of about 150 kms round trip. The start point was the Eden Food Bank location at 3185 Unity Drive and the end point was Five Guys Burgers and Fries in the South Common Mall. MAC actively participated all day by updating event information brochures, selling Chinese Auction and 50/50 draw tickets, organizing breakfast for registrants, managing the Chinese Auction table, directing bikers to designated parking spots and ensuring that the event ran efficiently and smoothly. All money that was raised during this event went directly to support the work done by the Eden Food Bank.

MAC appreciates the admirable effort and time volunteered by the students, parents and the Executive members who gave up a Saturday to participate in this worthy cause and event.

Centennial Park in Toronto came alive on June 18, 2011 as the Mangalorean community brought their picnic umbrellas, water coolers, enthusiasm and participated in the 2011 Annual Family Picnic organized by MAC.

Beautiful sunny skies and even sunnier moods set the tone for the day and with the blow of a whistle and the blaring megaphone announcements, the festivities began. Passing the parcel, skipping, sack race, 3-legged race and the lemon and spoon race kept the children and adults engaged. With happy smiles, some teary faces and eager hands, the children accepted the candy bars and gifts. The star attraction was the Bouncing Inflatable, a Blue Castle that kept the children enthralled as they bounced and hopped in it. Bocce Ball kept our seniors on their toes as they aimed to get the balls closest to the target. The most popular game was, of course, the water balloon throw and everyone participated in it wholeheartedly.

The family picnic is designed to bring the community together in a non-stressful and relaxed atmosphere. Families and friends caught on news and events while children made the most of their freedom. Team sports generated competitiveness but also team spirit and sportsmanship. In every game, there are winners and losers but at the MAC picnic, there were no losing teams. People participated wholeheartedly and enjoyed an aggressive game of throw ball and volleyball. The Tug O War contest is elevated to an Olympic sport at the MAC picnic as men and women gird their loins and put on a show of strength, agility and determination.

The potluck was a mouth watering display of authentic Mangalorean dishes, Italian pizza and spaghetti, curries and rice dishes. Bingo provided respite from the hectic fun and a time to relax and sit. Monetary prizes were awarded to the delight of the crowd and the winners walked away with a tidy amount. Tea perked up the sleepy heads in the evening and delicious watermelon was cut and served by Paul and Irene Mathias. MAC appreciates the generosity of Dinesh and Cheryl Jairaj for being the sponsors at the picnic and promoting their insurance products and Global RESP's. Our special thanks to Sr. Ferdinanda for her blessings and prayers, Reynold Sequeira for enthusiastically conducting the games and bingo, Jerry Cardoza for his assistance with games and announcements, photographers Ivan Lobo and Vijay Pereira and all the members and volunteers for their time and effort.

The picnic was a grand success with participation from over 350 people who came together in a spirit of camaraderie and friendship. MAC thanks all members and volunteers who worked tirelessly to organize and coordinate and put in tremendous effort to ensure that the picnic was an enjoyable event.

And now that the party is over, wasn’t that a blast!!!! We must do it all over again next year!!

The Mangalorean Association of Canada’s 2011 Family Social was a great success. Thank you’s and felicitations go out to a whole host of people. Firstly we thank you for coming and having a good time. The youth rocked the house with their enthusiasm, flare and dance moves. You “thought you could dance” – and you definitely did. The young and the young at heart dined, mingled and danced the night away. The two dance groups put on a spectacular show and amazed the crowd with their choreographic creativity and talents.

A big shout out to Ivan D’Lima - whose emceeing wit, charmed us all on the dance floor for the various games, dances and prizes.

DJ Rudiii’s sound and lightshow dialled up the ambiance all the way up to electric. The beats kept beckoning everyone's feet to get up and dance.

A shout out to the Grand Taj for their culinary spread both at dinner and midnight snack. It fuelled us to keep rocking all night.

Jerson Marques captured the night in pictures – avoiding me describing it in a thousand words. Check them out here. See if you can spot yourself lost in the moment.

None of these great events are ever possible without the patronage of our generous sponsors to whom we are always thankful. We look forward to your ongoing support in service to our community. We show our gratitude and appreciation by encouraging you all to visit their websites and use their products and services.

The MAC executive committee works tirelessly to put on these events. The service of our fellow kin, our friends and our community has brought us all an abundance of joy. We look forward to continuing such traditions and anticipate your continual participation and support in the various events planned.

So now as you rest your feet, air out your dancing shoes and hang up you suave duds and gorgeous dresses we invite you once again to don your picnic hats, grab your shorts, put on some sunscreen and join us once again for a day of food, fun and games at the MAC 2011 Family Picnic on June 18, 2011 at Centennial Park, Picnic Area 6 and 7 (Address: 256 Centennial Park Rd, Toronto, ON, M9C 5N3).

We are awaiting your presence to start the party, looking forward to seeing you there!!!!
