Events : MAC organizes Christmas Caroling in Canada
on 2012/12/30 23:00:00 (728 reads)

A casual conversation, nostalgic memories and wishful longing, a simple idea of bringing cheer and warmth in an otherwise cold country – this is how Christmas caroling began in Mississauga, Ontario. Inspired by his childhood days in Mumbai, Samson Soans, a new and active member of the Mangalorean Association of Canada (MAC) presented this initiative to the Executive members of the association. MAC, always seeking fresh and innovative ideas to work within the community especially during Christmas was excited to support this initiative and ensure its success.

Christmas is an exciting yet hectic time of the year with parents scrambling to finish shopping, attend to numerous chores or attend office parties. Hence the door to door caroling allowed parents to experience the real meaning of Christmas and the holidays by gathering the children around them and enjoying beautifully sung Christmas carols. The carols reminded us of family, tradition and a warm special time of the year – the birth of baby Jesus. The Christmas caroling event was presented to the MAC community at the monthly Konkani mass and was met with great eagerness and overwhelming response. In return, families were requested to donate non-perishable food items or money which would be given to the Eden Food Bank in Mississauga. The Food Bank provides nourishment to the poor in the community and cherishes any donations that will assist them to feed the hungry.

The carolers consisted of enthusiastic children of different ages, parents and grandparents who sang with a passion and spirit of the season. A rotating schedule based on locations for 3 days was created and accommodated several families per day. Carolers gathered at each house decked in Christmas colors and sang 4-5 carols per house before driving on to the next destination. Families welcomed the carolers with open arms, eagerness and happiness. The generosity of the people was refreshing and whether it was bringing food and drinks for the carolers or in donating items for the food bank, they truly welcomed everyone into their homes. The miracle of little baby Jesus seemed intrinsic and natural to everyone.

The carolers collected $550 and approximately 100 pounds of non-perishable food items to be donated to the Eden Food Bank. MAC thanks each and every family who supported the undertaking, all the volunteers, youngsters and parents who selflessly gave their time and ensured the success of the event. Christmas is a season of peace, love and goodwill and this was reflected in the children’s smiles and voices, the rapt attentiveness of the parents and the indulgent gestures of the grandparents.

MAC wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Caroling in 2013 and years to come!

Events : MAC Monthi Fest 2012 on September 9, 2012
on 2012/9/11 18:54:37 (1661 reads)

Dearest Members, Friends, Sponsors and family,

For the tenth year, we the Mangalorean Association of Canada (MAC) celebrated the Monthi Fest of our Blessed Mother Mary on September 9th, 2012. Over 400 Mangaloreans from all over the Greater Toronto Area participated to offer their devotion and gratitude to our Blessed Mother at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Mississauga.

The celebration began with the traditional flower throwing ceremony where children eagerly placed flowers in honor of Mother Mary to the accompaniment of ”Sokkad Sangatha Melyan” and “Moriyek Hogolsiyan”. Gerry D’Mello led the prayers for the ceremony. This was followed by a solemn procession to the church with our Knights of Columbus as honour guard.

The Holy Mass was concelebrated in Konkani by 7 Mangalorean priests led by our own spiritual director Rev. Fr. Edwin D’Souza. Fr. Runjan D’Sa's passionate homily stirred up a deep zeal for Our Lady. The walls of the church resounding with the mellifluous sounds of the choir charmed the congregation with the selection of Konkani hymns. The choir was led by Merlyn Rodrigues.

The cultural program commenced in the church hall and the emcee for the evening, Mr. Manohar Pais, welcomed the enthusiastic guests who flocked the hall in anticipation of another resounding successful program. Mr. Ronald Fernandes, President of the Mangalorean Association of Canada, with his inimitable charm thanked the clergy, sponsors, volunteers and guests.

Seneca Rego began the program with a traditional dance. Our sponsors were honored with a blessed candle. Rony Monteiro and Santosh D'Souza entertained the crowd with their wit and humour.

The highlight of the evening was a beautiful play performed by our youth. It depicted the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima to the three children in Portugal. The play was written and directed by the esteemed Mr. Manohar Pais, whose hard work and dedication motivated the youth to brilliantly display their talent. The play was in performed completely in amchi baas, Konkani.

The evening continued with the traditional Novenm ceremony where guest received the blessed harvest with milk. Rony Monteiro, Leo Rego, Santosh D'Souza and Lucy D'Mello entertained the guest with a second round of fun and humour during dinner.

Scholarships, which have now become a MAC tradition, were handed out to Sheldon Savio Vaz and Alistar Melroy D’Souza. Once again the scholarships were generously sponsored by UAE Exchange and Reginald and Mary Fernandes. Konkan Delite catered a traditional all-vegetarian meal with the highlight of the meal being the delicious “Pathraade” and the sumptuous dessert, ‘Vorn’.

The evening continued with the traditional folk dance choreographed by Ms. Lydia Noronha which took us all back to Mangalore. Nicole, Narissa & Nishita D’Mello serenaded us with their angelic voices.

The second highlight of the evening was hilarious skit written and performed by the esteemed Mr. Francis Fernandes Cassia and Santosh D'souza. All 400 guest in the hall were left roaring with laughter.

The evening came to an end with the announcement of the raffle prizes and finally the solemn singing of the Laudate.

A myriad of volunteers generously donated their time and energy, working tirelessly to ensure that Our Lady was honoured through a memorable evening. Mangalorean Association of Canada will always indebted to all the volunteers, committee members and sponsors who guarantee the astounding success of the Monthi Fest annually. We look forward to seeing you all at our next event - The MAC 2012 Christmas Party!!
