Dearest Members, Friends, Sponsors and family,

For the tenth year, we the Mangalorean Association of Canada (MAC) celebrated the Monthi Fest of our Blessed Mother Mary on September 9th, 2012. Over 400 Mangaloreans from all over the Greater Toronto Area participated to offer their devotion and gratitude to our Blessed Mother at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Mississauga.

The celebration began with the traditional flower throwing ceremony where children eagerly placed flowers in honor of Mother Mary to the accompaniment of ”Sokkad Sangatha Melyan” and “Moriyek Hogolsiyan”. Gerry D’Mello led the prayers for the ceremony. This was followed by a solemn procession to the church with our Knights of Columbus as honour guard.

The Holy Mass was concelebrated in Konkani by 7 Mangalorean priests led by our own spiritual director Rev. Fr. Edwin D’Souza. Fr. Runjan D’Sa's passionate homily stirred up a deep zeal for Our Lady. The walls of the church resounding with the mellifluous sounds of the choir charmed the congregation with the selection of Konkani hymns. The choir was led by Merlyn Rodrigues.

The cultural program commenced in the church hall and the emcee for the evening, Mr. Manohar Pais, welcomed the enthusiastic guests who flocked the hall in anticipation of another resounding successful program. Mr. Ronald Fernandes, President of the Mangalorean Association of Canada, with his inimitable charm thanked the clergy, sponsors, volunteers and guests.

Seneca Rego began the program with a traditional dance. Our sponsors were honored with a blessed candle. Rony Monteiro and Santosh D'Souza entertained the crowd with their wit and humour.

The highlight of the evening was a beautiful play performed by our youth. It depicted the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima to the three children in Portugal. The play was written and directed by the esteemed Mr. Manohar Pais, whose hard work and dedication motivated the youth to brilliantly display their talent. The play was in performed completely in amchi baas, Konkani.

The evening continued with the traditional Novenm ceremony where guest received the blessed harvest with milk. Rony Monteiro, Leo Rego, Santosh D'Souza and Lucy D'Mello entertained the guest with a second round of fun and humour during dinner.

Scholarships, which have now become a MAC tradition, were handed out to Sheldon Savio Vaz and Alistar Melroy D’Souza. Once again the scholarships were generously sponsored by UAE Exchange and Reginald and Mary Fernandes. Konkan Delite catered a traditional all-vegetarian meal with the highlight of the meal being the delicious “Pathraade” and the sumptuous dessert, ‘Vorn’.

The evening continued with the traditional folk dance choreographed by Ms. Lydia Noronha which took us all back to Mangalore. Nicole, Narissa & Nishita D’Mello serenaded us with their angelic voices.

The second highlight of the evening was hilarious skit written and performed by the esteemed Mr. Francis Fernandes Cassia and Santosh D'souza. All 400 guest in the hall were left roaring with laughter.

The evening came to an end with the announcement of the raffle prizes and finally the solemn singing of the Laudate.

Dear Friends,

On July 7th, 2012 we, the Mangalorean Association of Canada (MAC) had another successful Annual Family Picnic at Centennial Park. It was conducted with great enthusiasm and involved tremendous participation from the community.

Beautiful weather contributed to this awesome day filled with blaring megaphone announcements, lively games of sack race, 3-legged race and the lemon and spoon race and scrumptious food. The potluck was a mouth watering display of authentic Mangalorean dishes along with other culinary delights.

We had entertainment and games that kept the children, youth, adults and seniors engaged to their best. The highlights of the day were the water balloon toss, the tug-of-war, 50/50 draw and the bingo. Congratulations to all the winners.

The picnic was a grand success with participation of people who came together in a spirit of camaraderie and friendship. MAC thanks all members and volunteers who worked tirelessly to organize and coordinate and put in tremendous effort to ensure that the picnic was an enjoyable event.

We the Mangalorean Association of Canada were proud to sponsor Aaron Joshua Pinto, a Mangalorean-Canadian and son of one of our members, who was chosen by Global Vision, on behalf of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada as a National Youth Ambassador Caucus on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

He is one of a hundred young Canadians from across our country to represent Canada along with thirty youth as a Junior Team Canada Ambassador on an international trade mission to the Americas, specifically, Panama and Colombia.

Every delegate selected for this mission is tasked with the goal of raising $5,500 in sponsorship from various business, government, and community organizations.

On behalf of MAC, we have contributed $200 and wish him all the best in this endeavour and look forward to his report at the end of the mission.
