Mangalorean News : Obituary - Gratian Mascarenhas

Gratian Mascarenhas (87), retired Custom Administrative Officer, husband of the late Daisy Mascarenhas, father of Sr Pramila, Sr Leonarda, Maria / Raymond Monteiro, William / Violet, Asha / Donald DíSouza and Laura / Rony Fernandes, grandfather of Mithun, Roger, Melissa, Michelle, Vanessa, Dalton, Datson & Rebecca, brother of Sr Rita (Calcutta), passed away on Saturday, November 13, 2010.

Funeral details will be announced later.

The feast day of the nativity of Our Lady represents a new life, a new presence and brings us innumerable favors. September 8th is also celebrated as a thanksgiving harvest festival in Mangalore wherein parishes bless the newly harvested grain and distribute it to parishioners. This grain is added to milk and drunk before a festive vegetarian meal symbolizing the new harvest is eaten with great enthusiasm.

On a sweltering July afternoon music fans from across some provinces of Canada and neighbouring states of America gathered at the Meadowvale Theatre to witness the first ever musical nite of Melwyn Peris in Canara Kala Saanz 2010.

The musical show started bang on time with the singing of the National anthem of India and Canada by the little children. Flavian Pinto in his opening address welcomed the guests and gave a precursor of the 6 years of the musical journey of Canara World Foundation, right from its inception. He was filled with pride when he mentioned that Canara World Foundation was the only Organisation outside India and gulf countries, who had succeeded in bringing so many Mangloarean performing artists to North America. He also introduced the Anchor Host of the eveningís show Mr. Donald Alva, who ably conducted the show in a gracious manner.

Events : MAC organizes memorial service for Bajpe Air-Crash victims

A condolence meet followed by special Requiem Mass to pay tributes to the victims of the plane crash in Mangalore Bajpe Airport was held on June 05, 2010 at Sts. Martha & Mary Church, Mississauga, organized by the Mangalorean Association of Canada (MAC). A large crowd gathered to pay homage to the fellow brethren who suffered a tremendous tragedy to express their anguish and sympathize with their families left behind.

Local News :  Sarfaraz Pinto -First Mangalorean Deacon for Diocese of Toronto

It is an awe-inspiring moment for the Mangalorean & Goan communities in Canada when their own Sarfaraz Pinto of Mangalore origin was ordained as the Deacon in a ceremony at St. Michaelís Cathedral in Toronto on May 29th 2010. Sarfaraz, along with caring for his wife and four children in Scarborough, Ontario, will now have an additional role of taking care of the parishioners in the Diocese of Toronto and supporting them with their spiritual needs. From now on, Rev.Mr.Sarfaraz will help with the sacraments of baptism, holy matrimony, funerals, as well as other services. He will read the gospel and preach but not say Mass or hear confession.
