On Saturday May 13th 2006, the Grand Taj Banquet Hall and Convention Centre, 6915 Dixie Rd. unit # 20 Mississauga, Ontario L5T 2G2, reverberated with the strains of music and the punch and panache of a 400 strong audience at the 4th Annual Family Social organized by the Mangalorean Association of Canada (M.A.C.) now in its 5th year and growing steadily.

The proceedings began bang on time with an eager and enthusiastic response from those who arrived early and it required no cajoling, no second invitation to sashay across the dance floor to the lilting upbeat tunes of ‘New Illusions’ the five piece band that entertained with both old and new numbers all through the evening and early morn. The enormous dance floor accommodated all-kids, teens and adults who danced their feet away.

The décor, the comfortable seating, the enormous dance floor and a truck load of beautifully packaged gifts enhanced the ambience and added the promise of a fun filled extravaganza.

The congregation that converged to celebrate the evening was a fantastic mix of the very young to the very old, all well entertained by the emcee Mr. Ivan D’Lima, who kept the evening seamless, pacing the items on the agenda and keeping the crowd on their toes. The Indian dinner and snacks, a gourmets delight were a finger licking feast that satisfied all taste buds.

Melwyn Menezes, President of the association thanked the sponsors and all well wishers present for their support and continued interest in the Association. He announced the make over of the website, courtesy of the hard work put in by well wishers Mike and Shaumita D’Souza. He also signaled an intention of this enthusiastic and energetic association to soon commence a formal membership drive. This step has been taken due to the tremendous positive interest voiced by the Mangalorean community for active participation in the managing and organizing the activities of the association. He invited and encouraged new talent to grow this association further based on the strong foundation that it has been built on, to contribute time and efforts and take the association to even greater heights.

The highlight of the evening was a spectacular surprise event - an impromptu beauty contest, “Miss Mangalore” which added glitter and glamour to the already glimmering show. It held the audience’s rapt attention where the first 15 to register were chosen out of a multitude that clamoured to be included and participate. Two quickly engineered rounds that had the audience shouting hoarse, backing their favourites concluded with Jolene Sequeira being crowned queen with Sarah Amin and Aeneka Ramchandani as 1st and 2nd runners up.

The evening thumped into the early morn with nonstop feet stomping music and wound up with energetic teenagers still begging for more.
