Each year, Lent offers us an opportunity to discover the meaning and value of our Christian lives, the importance of humility and the need to be closer to the cross, share the burden of other people and help them through their troubles. During this holiest of seasons, Catholics retell the journey of Jesus to his magnificent end, Easter - the promise of new life and the fulfillment of our faith.

The Mangalorean Association of Canada (MAC) undertook a tremendous initiative in organizing the first ever Konkani Stations of the Cross followed by a Konkani service during the Lenten season. Fr. Edwin DíSouza, the spiritual advisor of the association, magnanimously offered to lead the Stations of the Cross and consecrate the service in his parish, Sts. Martha and Mary Parish, Mississauga.

The community responded with enthusiasm and fervor at this wonderful opportunity to commemorate the passion and death of Christ in the language of their forefathers. Good Friday rituals were conducted in the church followed by the veneration of the Cross. The Konkani choir added solemnity to the ceremonies with the congregation participating wholeheartedly in the singing of Konkani hymns. It was satisfying to watch the numerous youth who made every effort to attend each week and demonstrate their willingness to learn and read during the Stations of the Cross.

To continue this tradition of enhancing and developing our Mangalorean culture and language, MAC will organize a Konkani service on the first Saturday of each month at St. Martha and Mary Parish, Mississauga at 6.00 pm.

Numerous volunteers contributed in big and small ways to this Lenten initiative. With their co-operation, sacrifices, time and effort, the Konkani Stations of the Cross was immensely successful. MAC appreciates and applauds the members of the association, its volunteers, Fr. Edwin DíSouza, Fr. Andrew Lewis and Sr. Ferdinanda for all their assistance during this historic venture.

MAC wishes everyone the joy and peace of the Risen Lord!
